Presented in fair condition is this rare and highly collectable example of a 1959 / 1962 Rolex Submariner Non-Date 5508. The watch features a 38mm stainless steel case without crown guards, a stainless steel bezel with black insert, a classic black gilt dial with rich, warm patina hour markers and gilt hands, and is coupled to a stainless steel Oyster bracelet. Having been serviced by our watchmakers, it’s deemed to be running smoothly while displaying honest signs of age, wear, and historic character consistent with a mid-century tool watch.
Manufactured in 1959 and originally sold in 1962, the reference 5508 holds a legendary place in Rolex dive watch history as the iconic ‘Small Crown’ Submariner. Powered by the automatic Calibre 1530 movement, this piece showcases the sought-after early gilt dial aesthetic, golden minute track, and clean non-date layout that define the golden age of vintage Rolex sports models.
What truly sets this example apart is its extraordinary naval provenance. Originally purchased via HMS Caprice, a Royal Navy M-class destroyer, the watch is supplied with its vintage presentation box, the original 1950s Submariner guarantee document detailing its HMS Caprice connection, and an extensive archive of historical Rolex UK service invoices spanning the 1960s and 1970s.
Due to its age, the watch is no longer suitable to be used in wet environments or submerged in water. The watch might not be running within expected tolerances for Rolex timekeeping.
